Carving out writing time

Summer is a challenging time for me to write. With so many family members and friends going on vacation, wanting to get out on the lake or head to the beach, and just wanting to get together, I’m frequently rearranging my schedule to accommodate invitations. My writing suffers even when I try to be disciplined.

I prefer to write in the early morning. It’s quiet other than the sounds of nature in the backyard. I can watch the sunrise through the treeline. The rest of the family is usually sleeping, at work, or out of the house. I can focus and let my characters do their thing. I find writing in a noisy, chaotic house nigh on impossible. (Salute to those of you who can to this!)

Writing late at night doesn’t help me much, as I have a family of night owls. I’m the lone early riser. I appropriated a pair of my husband’s noise canceling headphones and they are helping me focus.

Earlier this week, I appropriated a pair of my husband’s noise canceling headphones and they are helping me focus. Now I can get a little writing done while the family is home. It’s not an ideal situation yet I can deal with it.

So this week, I’m scheduled to head to the river for a photo shoot, to the local park to shoot the sunrise, and to the lake for a cookout and swim with the family. I’ll write when I can during the early morning and at night but I will write.

What challenges you this summer and how do you plan to plow through?
