Blank page, blank mind

Writer’s block happens to everyone. It’s not just for those of us who call ourselves writers.

When I worked in the corporate world, I had writer’s block often. I’d need to compose an e-mail or write a memo. Despite jotting the points I needed to cover so that I didn’t forget anything, I’d sit down at the computer and stare at a blank screen for a while before moving to another task. And I wasn’t the only one.

In fact, every time I went to a business writing class, it was one of the main concerns.

For me, staring at a blank screen rarely brings inspiration and often gives me a headache instead.

So, what do I do to overcome writer’s block? I do something else. I get my mind off of the writing task that is blocked and do a load of laundry or write on a different project or research a project that’s been in the back of my mind. Anything other than the project that has me tearing my hair out. Bonus points if it’s a creative process as that seems to unlock my writer’s block more quickly than housework. But let’s be honest, housework is not my favourite task.

Tell me your favourite ways to overcome writer’s block.
